Fletcher House

Tamarama, Sydney

Coastal living with an urban edge

Fletcher House blends Tamarama’s relaxed surf culture with the character of Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The interior design combines earthy coastal textures with the refined edge of the clients’ urban lifestyle. Natural stone and timber, chosen to reflect the colours of coastal living, sit alongside sculptural furnishings selected to echo the movement of the sea. Light-filled rooms extend onto outdoor terraces, creating a natural flow between inside and out that complements Sydney’s climate and way of life.

“Se Déa took the time to understand our style, quirks, and love for considered design. They didn’t just listen—they challenged our ideas in the best ways possible, pushing us to think bigger and better.”

Fletcher House Project Brief

Positioned between Bondi and Bronte, Fletcher House sits in one of Sydney’s most sought-after coastal suburbs. The brief was to modernise and elevate the interiors while retaining character. The clients wanted a home that reflected their passion for high-end fashion, bold style and warm, welcoming spaces. Key goals included improving flow between old and new, enhancing outdoor areas for entertaining, and creating a private retreat in the master suite.

Our role as interior designers was to respond to Tamarama’s beachside lifestyle and the clients’ cosmopolitan tastes, creating a home that feels connected to its coastal context without defaulting to a typical beach house look.

Project at a glance

  • Location: Tamarama, Eastern Sydney.

  • Client: A young family with a love of bold design and high fashion.

  • Budget Guidelines: Balanced with restraint, focusing spending on statement areas.

  • Project Duration: Staggered to align with council approvals and the impending arrival of the clients’ first child.

“A true sanctuary by the sea, Fletcher House demonstrates Se Déa’s commitment to crafting personalised spaces that mirror their clients’ lifestyle and tastes.”

Our Design Approach

Fletcher House was reconfigured to maximise space and introduce moments of luxury within its townhouse-style footprint. The master suite was expanded into a private retreat, and a rooftop sauna was added for wellness and restoration. Council controls, including privacy considerations, guided the design of the upper levels to balance outlooks with coastal views.

Materiality anchored the approach. Blue and green stones reflect the ocean, while light and dark timbers add warmth and contrast. Stainless steel and concrete bring durability and a contemporary edge, set against the tactile qualities of natural stone. Each room was curated to tell its own story, with statement pieces such as the burnt Japanese Sugi dining table by Remington Matters, antique Cadrys rugs, and sculptural furniture that doubles as art.

Key features included

  • Custom dining table by Remington Matters in Japanese Sugi finish

  • Sculptural furniture: Tigmi Trading Etcetera Chairs, Soriana Sofa, Frank Gehry Wiggle Chair

  • Antique Cadry’s rugs grounding each space with heritage richness

  • Gucci wallpaper bringing a playful edge to the powder room and study

  • A bespoke rooftop sauna with ocean views

  • Master ensuite with a floating marble vanity and a custom steel-framed mirror opening onto a rooftop terrace

We knew we didn’t want a traditional beach house, but we did want a home that honoured its coastal roots. Se Déa’s interpretation of that vision exceeded our expectations—unexpected yet completely aligned with our contemporary tastes.”

Challenges and
Site Considerations

The project carried several constraints typical of Tamarama sites. The footprint was already maximised, with a shared wall and council requirements for privacy on the upper levels. Budget restraint meant prioritising statement areas while making economical choices elsewhere, and timing pressures were heightened by council approvals and the impending birth of the client’s baby. To manage this, the builder staged construction so the family could move in sooner while work continued.

About Tamarama

Tamarama is a jewel of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, often nicknamed “Glamarama” by Sydneysiders for its stylish residents, exclusivity and vibrant social scene. Positioned between the Bondi and Bronte headlands, it is a suburb where surf culture, family living and a cosmopolitan lifestyle converge. With dramatic cliffs and powerful surf breaks, Tamarama is one of Sydney’s most distinctive coastal locations.

Se Déa is recognised for interior design in Sydney’s east

Designing in the East means working at the intersection of lifestyle and prestige. From Bondi’s vibrant energy to Bronte’s family-friendly calm, these suburbs call for a design language that is both grounded and aspirational. Fletcher House reflects this balance, showing how our interiors are timeless, tactile and connected to community.

“This project opened the door to a bolder design direction. Classic design icons were revived in a modern context, and eclectic styling introduced playful moments. The clients’ adventurous, fashion-forward tastes allowed us to create interiors that were both highly personal and distinctly Se Déa.”
