NORFOLK House
Paddington, Sydney
Soft urban elegance with a heritage soul
Norfolk House reimagines the charm of a two-storey Victorian terrace with interiors that are at once refined, feminine, and light-filled.
Nestled in Paddington’s heritage-lined streets, the design balances compact proportions with a layered material palette that honours historic features while embracing contemporary family living. Blush tones, creamy stones, and warm timbers soften the restored sandstone and wrought iron detailing, creating a home that feels calm, airy, and deeply connected to its garden outlook.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered Se Déa when I did. From my very first meeting with Sam, I had complete confidence in her ability to transform our home. Her talent and expertise took our humble original design and turned it into something truly beautiful.”

Norfolk House Project Brief
Set within one of Sydney’s most iconic suburbs, Norfolk House is defined by its narrow block, ornate façade, and heritage restrictions. The client wanted a home that retained its historic charm while reworking the layout into a light-filled, practical home for family living.
The goals included opening the ground floor to improve circulation, connecting the indoor spaces with the courtyard garden, and maximising the northern aspect of its corner block to flood the interiors with natural light.
Project at a glance
Location: Paddington, bordered by Darlinghurst, Centennial Park, Woollahra.
Client: A growing family with a love of original detailing and refined, feminine design.
Budget Guidelines: Focused on spatial reconfiguration and tactile finishes.
Project Duration: Staged to accommodate council approvals and heritage sensitivities.
“A Blushing Paddington Terrace Renovation. Many of Sydney’s beautiful early 1900s terraces suffer from a lack of natural light and outdoor connections. Interior designers SE DÉA optimised this house by reworking the floorplan and introducing a soft, calming interior palette. The finished home reflects the owners’ style, full of subtle textures, warmth, hints of blush and curving forms.”
Our Design Approach
The existing terrace layout was compact and disconnected, with the kitchen isolated at the rear and little connection to the outdoors. By carefully reconfiguring the plan, Se Déa introduced flow, light and proportion back into the home. The rear was excavated to improve ceiling height and bring greater balance with the scale of the front rooms, while circulation paths were overlapped with room functionality to achieve an open-plan living space without compromising on privacy. Large doors now open directly to the northern garden, filling the terrace with daylight and creating natural cross-ventilation.
Materiality anchored the interiors, balancing Victorian character with a softer, contemporary expression. Pale timbers, creamy stones, and blush hues enriched the feminine palette, while restored sandstone and wrought iron balustrades preserved the terrace’s period character. Textured renders, painted brickwork, and reimagined period tiling added layers of depth and tactility to the façade, ensuring the home feels authentic to its Paddington setting while offering a softer, contemporary layer of family comfort.
Key features included
Restored sandstone foundations, celebrating the home’s original materiality

“What stood out most to me was how calm and assertive the Se Déa team was throughout the process. Their unwavering attention to detail, coupled with a focus on delivering not only functional but also clever design, made all the difference.”

Challenges and
Site Considerations
Like many terrace homes in Paddington, Norfolk House carried spatial constraints. Its narrow footprint and reduced rear proportions made functionality difficult, while strict planning controls shaped every decision. Se Déa approached the design by respecting the decorative detailing of the front rooms while introducing a more contemporary language at the rear. The rear floor level was lowered slightly to increase ceiling height and restore scale. Careful orientation of the plan prioritised natural light, material harmony, and stronger connections to the outdoors.
